Survival Skills - Sunglasses
Shatter-proof, frameless Riding Glasses
Several years back I happened across some inexpensive frameless yellow "contrast enhancing" sunglasses in a bike shop. I
bought a couple of pairs because the yellow contrast enhancing colour is extremely effective in poor light conditions, but there are no legal visors of this colour.
When I got to wear them, I particularly liked the wide wrap-around design of
the lens itself which keeps the wind out of the eyes when the visor is up, and the yellow tint was particularly good on grey, winter days, enhancing the dull
light but taking enough glare out of the light when the sun did peep through that I wasn't immediately reaching for the dark glasses.
With care, the anti-scratch lens stayed in good condition too, with just the
same sort of care and cleaning that a visor needs. Each pair lasted well over a year, and remarkably I managed not to lose or sit on them them quite as soon as I normally shed or crush sunglasses.
I finally lost the second pair earlier this year and really missed them. The bike
shop doesn't do them any more but I hunted round and found a supplier.
I also found the supplier also does a nice metallic blue "iridium" mirror tint pair which are good in full summer sun. If you're not
fond of swapping over your tinted visor, sunglasses are of course much easier to remove when the sun goes down, but I will warn you that like most of the cheaper coated sunglasses, the metallic tint
does scratch easily. That said, they do look cool under the lid!
There's also an anti-scratch "smoke" tint available.
To protect your glasses off the bike, there's a nice soft protective zip case that can be slipped in a pocket or attached to a belt or bum bag strap with the clip.
It's worth noting that the material of the lenses is constructed to safety
eyewear standards, so is safer than most budget sunglasses. The frame-less design of both pairs means that there is no obstruction to peripheral vision at all.
I've added these items to the shop, so Survival Skills can now supply these recommended riding glasses.
