Course Summary
A one or two day course and a must if you aim to commute. The topics covered will include fast commuting roads (either motorway or dual carriageway) as well as city centre
traffic in Oxford or the Medway towns.
London Riding
By opting for a second day, we can go to central London and back to help you develop the confidence to cope with heavy traffic - if you can ride in London, you can ride anywhere!
Let an ex-Despatch Rider show you how to fight with the worst the capital can throw at you - and win! A must if you aim to commute to the big city!
The course is suitable for all riders with a full licence, including those who have just passed their DAS or restricted access (125) tests, and is equally suitable for full power & 33hp restricted
motorcycles or automatic scooters.
Course Content
The course will cover defensive riding skills including hazard recognition, risk assessment and management, filtering and overtaking on fast roads, and slow
speed control. In particular, collision avoidance skills will be developed.
The second day will put these skills into use on a route offering the chance to heavy traffic on fast routes, as well as the jams of central London. The second
day will normally be timed to coincide with rush hour traffic.
Courses use a building block approach to learn core skills, avoiding the risk of teaching a skill which demands prior knowledge of some other technique, a
problem that can arise during unstructured training.
At the same time, courses are flexible enough that the depth and content can
be adjusted to take into account the prior knowledge and ability of the trainee, thus moving forward at the right pace to be challenging to all abilities. You are
not locked into a rigid course which may be inappropriate to your own riding standard - you won't get bored or pushed too fast.
Format of the course
Day one usually commence at 10am, beginning with a briefing over a coffee (allowing you to revive after the ride to meet us) followed by a short
discussion. On the first day, a short assessment ride will follow before we we begin to introduce and work through exercises to improve your riding in an
urban environment. A short off-road session will cover emergency braking, collision avoidance and slow control techniques. We pause for a short break
for tea and a bite to eat mid course on both days. We end each day with a debrief.
On the second day, the final ride will normally end in rush hour traffic, and comments and suggestions for your future improvement will be discussed. We
will be honest about your progress and will advise if we feel you need to spend more time on training - courses are described as open-ended for that reason.
You will cover around 75-80 miles on the first day and upto 100-120 on the second day. Routes have been carefully researched to provide increasingly complex challenges as the course progresses.
Training is normally done on a 1:1 basis. If, however, you wish to take training with a friend or partner, we will be happy to arrange that and the second rider will qualify for a 50% discount.
Logistics and teaching
Survival Skills courses use professional quality Motorola bike to bike radios, allowing real-time coaching and correction.
Course content has been researched in depth, is exhaustively tested and
subject to continual review and improvement. Courses are structured and employ proven teaching techniques. Outcome goals are set based on your
riding needs. Using the "learning loop" of explanation, demonstration, practice and correction, you are set clearly understandable and achievable goals at all times.
You will be provided with a lesson plan and brief course notes, and if weather permits, video footage will be available for review at the end of the course.
In short we aim to bring each trainee to the highest standard of riding he or she can achieve by offering you ideas to make you THINK about your riding,
rather than forcing you to ride to a particular style or learning to do it parrot fashion to pass a test.
Quite simply YOU, the trainee, come first at Survival Skills!
